Implementation of digital transformation in the world of health

The implementation of digital transformation in the field of health can be examined from two aspects, intra-organizational and inter-organizational. In the first approach, internal organizational processes are examined and how an organization can use digital technologies to increase productivity and reach the final value (patient satisfaction and compliance with the value-based payment structure) .

The second approach has a comprehensive view and tries to consider all the aspects and actors involved in the health ecosystem and in this way reach a comprehensive model of the state of the ecosystem, its future and its main needs .

Although the first approach is necessary and even vital for the implementation of digital transformation and achieving the intended function, sustainable change in the value structure of the health system depends on paying attention to the second approach or the inter-organizational approach .

According to the definition, the health system is a set of organizations, centers and people who work with the aim of providing health services to their target community. In this definition, people who need diagnostic-therapeutic services are considered as customers of the system, and the main goal of this system is to provide the best services to these people .

Against the above definition is the concept of health ecosystem. According to the definition, the health ecosystem includes all the organizations and people providing health services, service delivery facilitators, as well as each and every person in the society, both sick and healthy people. This small difference in the definition of ecosystem concept leads to a big difference in performance. In the second approach, community members are considered not as customers but as active and very important actors in this ecosystem .

Considering the above definitions, the concept of digital transformation in health can be better expressed. Digital transformation tries to transform the traditional health system into an active ecosystem using digital tools .

To achieve this goal, digital transformation transforms the main and influential roles and actors in the health ecosystem and the interactions between them and fundamentally changes the traditional position of organizations and target groups .

Why is digital health transformation important ?

We might think that the digital transformation of health will be very slow and may not even take place until the end of our working lives. But the fact is that the changes have started for some time and are happening at a high speed. What accelerated the digital transformation of health was, first of all, the needs of health systems and then the increase in the efficiency of technology .

Years ago, digital health technologies were mostly considered as non-essential tools and in some cases luxury, but today the position of these technologies has changed a lot; Although the capabilities of these technologies have become much more advanced and efficient compared to the past, the needs of the health system have been the main drivers of the acceleration of these developments. On the one hand, the increasing costs of the health system and the increasing gap between the needs and expectations of the people regarding the services of the health system have caused managers, policy makers and other health stakeholders to turn to technology solutions .
